Could America have another civil war?

One would say that you simply need two sides in order to get a civil war to start, and that a civil war in America couldn't possibly happen again because you don't have two sides. That factions (if any) are too split up.
Yet, there are actually two factions: Republicans and Democrats, and with this recent election, there was quite a lot of heat.
Now comes my question; since there was SO much heat, what would happen if popular Democratic politicians were assassinated by Republicans? Then, popular Republican politicians were soon assassinated.
The news would be all over it, and suggesting that politicial rivalries are occurring; the public, watching this, would get riled up.
Wouldn't it then escalate into a civil war? Or still, no?
I believe however, you scenario would indeed help prevent a civil war for multiple reasons.
1. While many people are passionate about there political beliefs, it's hard to image that the average Joe and Jane of America will support assassination of fellow Americans, let alone pick up arms against each other to fight for political power.
2. Generally speaking the conditions that cause Civil War don't exist in this country, they are greater than simple Political Ideologies. It would take a great deal of RADICAL Social, Economical and Political change to breed an environment ripe for civil war.
3. The fact that the media would be all over the hypothetical assassination would indeed get people riled up. People would be outraged regardless of there Political allegiance (generally speaking, of course there is always a fringe element) and would not stand for this type of organized violence in this country.
Hypothetically speaking The only thing I would see as a potential "spark" that would lead the country toward a potential environment of mass violence against fellow Americans would be the assassination of the president elect Obama (regardless of you political belief:God forbid).
But I don't think it would cause a full blown civil war, and I don't think it would be republican versus democrat.
When you have an extra large city within a state, the state usually is dragged along behind the large city's ideas & politics.
Just look at the last election.
New York, Chicago, LA, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, etc....all voted Democrat.
Their populations were enough to pull the Democratic vote forward.
If we had a Civil War of sorts, I'd say it would be the large cities....again, dragging the rest of the state behind them...would be the catalysts. Almost acting like magnets and pulling in their surrounding areas.
For instance, the City of Chicago voting power in the election extended well across the Indiana border and covered most of Northern Indiana.
We DO have a distinct separation across the country in terms of political ideals.
The East Coast large cities with their ethnic and minority voting power going one way.
Then the adventurous West Coast cities, who have historically always been a bit more liberal, and have a large ethnic and minority voting power also.
Then stuck in the middle is the Central Midwest....who are so far removed from the larger cities, that their needs and ideas seem to have become almost "old fashion" in the course of things.
It is definitely noticeable.
I believe the problem here would lie within the states with the largest cities.
Think of the situation with the gay marriage proposal happening right now. Many states have said that banning it would be against their state constitutions, like Hawaii. Then the courts ban it. Then other states have said no, only to have the courts say the state can't ban it, California.
But it would be a completely different story if the cities put in as much concentration to things as they did the last election.
We have more political and social division now than we did a hundred years ago.
Economically the US in in serious decline.
Our military is almost completely made up of state National Guards and Reserves.
(That means that now we have state National Guard units that are seriously battle hardened and know what they are doing, as opposed to the "weekend warriors" we used to have. These Guards don't have a problem blowing your backsides into next week)
Yes, a civil war of some sort could actually happen, but it wouldn't be the even split of one side versus another like the American Civil War. And it would be farther down the road than when would happen first.
We would have complete division all over the country.
Political unrest between states and cities.
Cities demanding controlling recognition different than its state.
Cities refusing state taxes, therefore removing the funding the states.
The US govt losing its power hold against the states.
States blocking their own borders against other states.
The possibility of northern border states trying to secede to the govt of Canada.
Large corporations with enough money to BUY a city or even a state.
States asking for secession due to religious reasons.
The list could go on and on.
However it works out, I assure you, that our country and government will NOT be as it is now within the next hundred years.
We will either be much larger after joining with Canada and part of Central, maybe even South American to simply economically survive or we will be split up into different territories.
There have been plenty of books written on this subject and it's a favorite topic of science fantasy writers.
Keep in mind...all great civilizations have risen, and all have fallen.
And one day, so will ours.
