I need help on a question my English teacher gave me regarding "Death of a Salesman"?

  • We've been talking about 'Great People' according to the Greeks, such as Odysseus and other legends. After reading many pages of Act 1, she gave us a question to answer. "Is Willie Loman's struggle, more, as, or less valuable than that of a great man?" I just don't really understand the question. Any help would be highly appreciated!

  • Ages since i read death of a salesman, but I think i remember enough to help you;

    Firstly ''Great Men'' of the Greek era were considered god like icons of there times great warriors (Hercules, Diomedes, Theseus and the list goes on to the great thinkers and problem solvers, Odysseus falls in nicely there) Now Willy Loman is a man who's fight is mainly with his boss until the point where he is laid off and then his fight becomes concentrated on himself, ruined as he cannot provide for his family, who love him very much. In the eyes of a Greek a man who could not provide for his family was not a man at all but a mere animal, scum if you like, that is how Willy see's himself and drives himself into this mental termoil having flash backs to his happier more succesful self in earlier life, trying to convince himself that he was still a worthey thriving man, but then he spots the easy way out, get his family the life insurance, buy killing himself. He does of course do this, the actof self sacrafice, death on the battle field was seen by nearly all anciant greeks as the most heroic and therefore great things a man could do, and that is what Willie has don, tried to provide for his family by sacrificing himself, a truly great act of selflesness. Just a bummer his insurance didnt pay off.

    So is his struggle more or less valuable?? I think more so because the amount or hurdels he has to cross to get to his decision to make the ultimate sacrifice because of a problem which was no fault of his own was fenominal. A truly great thing to do to make the ultimate sacrifice to provide for ones family no matter whos eyes you look through be it anciant greek or 60's america.

    anyway hope that helps and best of luck man
