  • Laparoscopies are very common today. They eliminate the need for open wound exploratory work and surgery. Often, one laparoscope is inserted through the belly button to eliminate visible scarring, and another is inserted at the 'work' site. It's pretty straightforward and is done under general anaesthetic.

The one thing you might want to check on is whether nitrogen is being used to inflate the belly to make things easier to see. If it is there might be some residual pain in the shoulder area (not sure why, but I'd ask about it).

(By the way, I'm not a medical person - I'm relaying info based on my wife's experiences with laparoscopies. Best person to speak to if you have any concerns is your MD.)

  • About 10 years ago, I had my gall bladder removed by laparoscopy surgery.
I felt nothing at all of course, I was back home one day and a half after the operation. And in a year or so there were no traces that three tiny orifices had been made in my flesh (one of them in my navel). I can wear a bikini to the beach because I have no marks or scars left at all.

Don't be scared. If you need surgery, the best thing you can do is stay calm and as relaxed as you can. That'll help lots.

    Good luck!!

    C.

  • laparoscopy, lap means opening, scopy means to look. so basically they will insert a metal tube to look into the area in question. they may make 1 or two more holes (the size of a dime) to insert a tool which will help them repair the area in question.-blurey
